Aiming High in Faith, Love and Learning

World Book Day

Dear Parents,

We are planning ahead for next half term and thinking about World Book Day which Christ Church will be celebrating on Tuesday 3rd March 2020.

There will be many exciting activities for the children to take part in at school during the week. Our aim is to share the excitement of a really great book and encourage all the children to celebrate the books they love.

Firstly, we are holding a ‘Potato Book Character’ competition. We are inviting the children to decorate a raw potato as their favourite book character. Anything goes, so let your imaginations run wild and have some fun creating an amazing spud!!

Entries to school on Monday 2nd March for judging – small prizes can be won for Early Years; Key Stage 1; Year 3 and 4; and Year 5 and 6. The potatoes will be on display in the hall after school if anyone wishes to view the Tate Potato.

The children are also invited to bring in their favourite book from home to read and share during the week. Please can this come in on Monday 2nd March and remain in school or in book bags until the end of the week.

During the day, the children will pair up with their reading buddy as well as enjoying listening to a variety of stories read by different teachers. You may have heard the children talking about The Picture Book World Cup that is taking place across the school. The winner will be announced in the World Book Assembly on Tuesday 3rd March. We have also been running the mystery teacher quiz – have you been able to solve the mystery of who is reading what?

Finally, we are inviting parents/grandparents into their children’s class to participate in a reading session during Book Week (Monday 2nd March – Friday 6th March). Parents can come in for the last 20 / 30 minute session to share a book with their own child; take part in a guided reading session or listen to the teacher reading a story. The idea is that you can read to them, ask them to read to you or even model a little of your own reading for pleasure. Feel free to join your child’s class on the days you are available. It is hoped that by offering every day, the majority of parents or grandparents will be able to visit their child’s class on at least one occasion. Sign-up sheets will be available outside each classroom from after half term.  Children without a visiting adult will carry on with reading activities as usual for that day. If anyone parents or grandparents would like to share a book with the class on any of the days, please let the class teacher know so we can arrange a slot. The children always love listening to a new storyteller. Please complete the attached form so that we have an idea of numbers.

The World Book Day vouchers will be sent home with children during book week and can be exchanged at a book shop for a free book or can be used as £1 off a different book. Please see the picture for the available books in the promotion. There is something for all ages and is a great opportunity to expand your reading collection.

Many thanks for your support – we hope this outlines our plans clearly and gives time over half term to plan potato entries. We are really looking forward to a fun-filled Book Week!
